QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER – JULY TO OCTOBER 2019

MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTORS

We would like to say a huge thank you to the greater Howick community for their loyal support and positive attitude with which they serve our city! We are so grateful for the nameless army who pour their lives out for the benefit of others:

  • The gentleman who uses his vehicle each week to remove the rubbish collected through our Renoverge Project.
  • The business who donates finances every month to ensure that our efforts to rejuvenate the Howick Falls Precinct gains momentum.
  • The enthusiastic team of Hungerbusters who gather weekly to sort/prepare food donated by a local supermarket for the hungry.
  • The efficient volunteer trainers who use their expertise to give the unemployed a hand up in reaching their dreams through the various Dream Centre job skills programmes.
  • And the many more.

We believe that there are no barriers to the transformation that we can’t overcome together – and so we are appealing to you to join us in being part of the solution to a barrier we need to overcome – financial sustainability across all our city transformation projects. As the work across our city increases we are needing to secure consistent funding for the following expenses:

6000

Petrol/maintenance costs to run the various brush cutters & equipment used in the renoverge project

10 000

Rental/expenses of dream centre where daily skills training takes place

25 000

Wages for management staff

Bakkie or Mini Truck to use in refuse collection and team transport for street cleanups
Large Trailer for transporting equipment/refuse for Renoverge Project

We are also looking to partner with a generous Howick community
To secure the following assets to assist us in achieving greater transformation goals:

If you or your business would like to sponsor any of these items or make a monthly contribution towards these expenses please contact info@lovehowick.com or phone Matt on 082 882 2019 to discuss.

LOVE HOWICK STREET STORE IS BACK!

The much-anticipated reopening of the Love Howick Street Store took place on Thursday 1 August. This concept is aimed at meeting the basic needs (food and clothing) of those who are unemployed or have a monthly income of R2000 or less. ‘As on organisation, Love Howick is committed to dealing with poverty in our area, and addressing some of the social ills plaguing the poor in our city’, says project leader Gary Flint. The Street Store will find its new home within the Dream Centre, located at 17 Bell Street, Howick. It will be open Monday – Friday, from 8 am to 2 pm.

The Street Store will operate using a ‘swap shop’ system whereby customers will be expected to bring in recycling from their community in exchange for tokens that they can use to shop for clothing and food items. This approach will ensure that we give everyone the responsibility of keeping the city of Howick clean as well as meeting some of the basic needs of the poor in our community.

We appeal to the broader Howick community to support this project with regular donations of good quality adult & children clothing, along with the following non-perishable food items:

  • 2,5kg Super Maize Meal,
  • 500g Sugar Beans,
  • 500g Brown Sugar,
  • 50g Knorr Soup Powder,
  • 500g Rice,
  • 1kg Samp,
  • Toilet Rolls,
  • Soap Bar,
  • 400g Peanut Butter,
  • Tea Bags (26’s),
  • 500ml Cooking Oil,
  • 1L Long Life Milk.

These can be dropped off at the Street Store, 17 Bell Street Howick between 8 am and 2 pm. Alternatively, you can purchase a Food Hamper for the Poor at R200.00. Payments can be made to Love Howick NPC (details above)

THE DREAM CENTRE AIMS TO ERADICATE POVERTY

“The Dream Centre is our bid to do something that will help treat the root of the poverty problem,” – Matt Hogarty (Founder)

Faced with the extent of the poverty and unemployment in the greater Howick area, the NPC ‘Love Howick’ has added to its list of projects an innovative education and training centre to empower the unemployed in the greater KZN Midlands region. Find out more over on our website – http://bit.ly/32pdN7U

In September our team at the Dream Centre added a new course to the current offering, training a company of new recruits for the hospitality industry. This Waitron Training was led by volunteer trainer, Derrick Dos Santos, manager at Treatery in Howick, using his vast experience to ensure trainees received a top quality programme. Thank you to the various local restaurants who partnered with us to give all our students 3 days of practical experience in their restaurants.

We have a number for courses to roll out in the near future under the Siya-Sebenza banner fit with full curriculum, course notes, support resources etc. All we need is experienced trainers who have a good track record in adult training and a minimum of 3 years industry experience in:

  • Merchandising,
  • Cashier Work,
  • Construction,
  • English in the Workplace,
  • Cleaning Services.

If you would like to apply to join our team as a Volunteer Trainer, please email your CV, Two Character References, and a Motivation Letter to info@lovehowick.com before end October 2019.
