A Taste of Change: New One-Pot Meals Launch Entrepreneurial Drive in Howick, uMngeni, South Africa

HOWICK, KZN – On Thursday, 20 November 2025, the Love Howick Park on Morling Street was a hub of community spirit and tangible hope. In a powerful collaboration, Love Howick, Love Cities, and Big Five Foods hosted the “Feed 500” event, serving free, nutritious meals to the community and launching a sustainable initiative to combat food insecurity long-term.

The event saw hundreds of residents come together to sample Big Five Foods’ new One Pot Meals. These innovative, very affordable, ready-to-cook solutions provide a complete meal—incorporating grains, proteins, and vegetables in a single package—and are designed to offer consistent nutrition with minimal preparation, making them ideal for busy households with challenging circumstances. A 1kg pack can make up to 20 meals, and at R60 per pack, this means you can feed someone at R3 per meal.

This was more than just a new innovative product launch; it was the beginning of a sustainable model aimed at creating jobs and combating the disastrous effects of spiralling food prices. The community were trialling a high-quality, nutritious product that forms the cornerstone of a new, empowering program. The centrepiece of this new model is the official launch of the Love Howick Resellers Program. This initiative aims to equip the community with healthy and affordable food while creating economic opportunities. The program empowers local entrepreneurs to become business owners by selling Big Five Foods’ products, including their One Pot Meals and Fortified Porridges, within their own networks.

It started with 10 enrolled resellers that have been trained by Love Howick’s acclaimed Entrepreneurship School, and the vision is to grow this significantly. It’s a dual-purpose solution: it increases access to affordable nutrition and fosters local enterprise. This event builds on recent momentum, following a major food delivery initiative where four tonnes of Big Five Foods products were transported to Howick for distribution, in partnership with SMG Grenadier and SMG Yamaha, demonstrating a growing coalition dedicated to practical community upliftment.

The “Feed 500” event has sown a seed. Through this partnership, Love Howick and Big Five Foods are proving that the fight against hunger requires not just a meal for today, but a sustainable system for tomorrow—one that nourishes both bodies and the local economy.

Keen to get your hands on this new product, packed with nutrition and flavour, at an affordable price? The one-pot meals and fortified porridges in a range of flavours can now be purchased directly by the public at Love Howick, 19 Morling Street, Howick.
